“To Punish and Enslave”

If you are a (male) child of the 1980’s and didn’t live under a rock, then you probably had Transformers. You also probably saw the afternoon cartoon series and might even have collected the comic books.

I loved the Transformers toys. I still think they were the best realized of all 80’s toy-lines, which is really saying something because the 80’s was the golden age of toys (G.I. Joe, Transformers, Voltron, Robotech, OmniBot, M.A.S.K., and so many more).

It was with very low expectations (despite my making comments to the contrary) that I entered the theater to watch Transformers. I fully expected my childhood memories to be crushed.

But beyond all expectation, Transformers was freakin’ AWESOME. It was Transformers, just the way I remembered and wanted it (Optimus Prime IS Optimus Prime, people are fleshlings and Megatron isn’t misunderstood – he is just plain mean), but with well written dialog and 100 million bucks of stuff blowing up.

Oh, and whoever at GM had the idea of targeting this movie for product placement should be promoted to head of GM marketing. Witty dialog, cool cars, giant transforming robots and stuff blows up; Transformers is a better movie than it ever deserved to be.
